Successful Treatment of Colon Cancer with Liver Metastasis in 78-Year-Old

A Patient Success Story:

A 78-year-old female, a known case of carcinoma breast operated 15 years ago with no evidence of recurrence, presented with acute intestinal obstruction involving the large colon. On evaluation, she was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon with synchronous liver metastasis.

Considering her age and the presence of liver metastasis, a sigmoid colon resection with end colostomy was performed in April 2025. After discussion with the medical oncologist, it was planned to proceed with chemotherapy for the liver metastasis. She subsequently received four cycles of chemotherapy under close supervision, which were completed in July 2025. Follow-up PET-CT revealed regression in the size of the liver metastasis, with no new lesions, and no recurrence at the local site or in the peritoneum.

In view of her clinical improvement, she was optimized for a definitive surgical procedure. On 12th August 2025, she underwent colorectal anastomosis with reversal of colostomy, along with liver metastatectomy. The surgery was uneventful, and her post-operative recovery has been satisfactory. She will undergo four additional cycles of adjuvant chemotherapy after one month.
