Bhubaneswar: Manipal Hospital Bhubaneswar recently achieved another milestone in advanced healthcare by successfully performing a complex bariatric surgery on a 66-year-old woman from Rayagada district. The surgery was led by Dr. Lalatendu Mahapatra, Consultant – General, Minimally Access and Bariatric Surgeon, along with the hospital’s multidisciplinary team.
The patient, Mrs. Panda, had been struggling with morbid obesity for several years, weighing 117 kg with a BMI of 50.2. Her condition was complicated by multiple health issues including hypertension, type 2 diabetes, hypothyroidism, obstructive sleep apnea, pulmonary embolism, osteoarthritis, and severe back pain. These challenges made everyday activities increasingly difficult and drastically affected her quality of life.
Encouraged by a friend’s positive experience, she consulted Dr. Mahapatra and underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy with proximal jejunal bypass-a minimally invasive procedure designed to promote long-term weight loss and improve obesity-related health conditions. The surgery was completed successfully with all necessary precautions, including deep vein thrombosis (DVT) prophylaxis and specialized post-operative care.
Post-surgery, Mrs. Panda is following a structured diet plan and has begun walking with the help of crutches. Her recovery is progressing well, and she is optimistic about regaining independence and mobility in the coming weeks.
